This field contains two of the most recognizable emission nebulae in the summer sky: NGC 7000, the North America Nebula, and IC 5070, the Pelican Nebula. They are part of the same vast complex of hydrogen gas, dust, and young stars, located roughly 2,500 light-years away. What makes this region so impressive is the contrast between glowing emission clouds and dark dust lanes. The bright blue-cyan areas highlight ionized gas, while the darker structures are dense clouds of interstellar dust blocking the light behind them. The glowing red curtains of the Flame nebula are energized by the bright star Alnitak, while just beside it the famous Horsehead appears as a dark silhouette \u2014 a cold pillar of dust and gas slowly eroded by the intense radiation of nearby stars.<br \/>The Horsehead nebula was first identified in 1888 by the Scottish astronomer Williamina Fleming while examining photographic plates taken at the Harvard College Observatory.
