Astrophotography

The editing process varies depending on the subject and the available data. The software and techniques used are listed alongside each photograph, together with the equipment, number of exposures, and total integration time.

The photographs are available as prints or can be licensed for publications, editorial projects, and commercial use. The images may not be reproduced or used without permission. For information and specific enquiries, visit the Contact page.

Most deep-sky images are captured from my garden in Sorrento, under skies rated approximately Bortle 5.5-6. The Bortle scale measures the darkness of the night sky from 1, representing the darkest skies, to 9, representing urban areas with severe light pollution. Other photographs are taken while travelling around the world or through international collaborations. You can check the approximate level of light pollution in a location using Light Pollution Map.

The Seestar Collective is an international community of astrophotographers who share raw images captured with Seestar telescopes from different locations around the world. The data can be selected, aligned, and combined to achieve very long integration times and reveal extremely faint structures. Whenever a photograph includes data from the community, the collaboration is mentioned alongside the image.

It depends on what you want to photograph. For the night sky and the Milky Way, a camera, a fast lens, and a tripod may be all you need. If you want to explore deep-sky astrophotography without building a complex setup, a smart telescope such as a Seestar (Global store – US store) offers a compact, automated system for getting started. The most important thing is to learn about the night sky and gradually develop your image acquisition and processing skills.

For deep-sky objects, I mainly use the Seestar S50 and Seestar S30 Pro smart telescopes, while for wider fields and nightscapes I use a Sony Alpha 7 IV. If you are looking for a simple, complete system to get started, I recommend Seestar telescopes (Global store – US store).

The colours come from light actually recorded by the sensor, but they are processed to reveal structures and colour differences that are often too faint for the human eye to see. I do not use generative artificial intelligence to create or add elements to my photographs. Some artificial intelligence-based software may be used to reduce noise or improve detail, always working with the original photographic data.
